What Is the Embryo Accumulation Method and How Is It Applied?

The Embryo Accumulation Method (Embryo Pooling), is a strategic approach aimed at increasing the number of healthy embryos available for transfer, particularly for women with low ovarian reserve (poor responders), women of advanced age, or couples who have obtained a low number of embryos in previous IVF attempts. The primary goal of this method is to freeze and accumulate embryos from one or more ovarian stimulation and egg retrieval (OPU) cycles, and then perform genetic screening (PGT-A\/PGS) or PGD on them collectively, or directly select the highest quality ones for transfer.

Following the first ovarian stimulation and egg retrieval procedure, the embryos obtained are typically frozen (vitrification) at the blastocyst stage (day 5 or 6). Subsequently, after the intended mother's body has rested, a second (or if necessary, additional) stimulation and egg retrieval cycle is initiated. Embryos obtained from this cycle are also frozen in the same manner. Once a sufficient number of embryos have been accumulated, all embryos are thawed simultaneously and can either be biopsied for Preimplantation Genetic Testing for Aneuploidies (PGT-A) or Diagnosis (PGD), or the morphologically best ones among them can be selected for transfer. In this way, a greater number of and potentially healthier embryo options are obtained for a single transfer.
